Solitaire

Red and black cards, fifty-two moving

from deck to table in line,

seven stacks, black and red descending.

Without royal support, the numbers

will not fall down.

Without space, the royalty cannot

take hold. The elements

of earth and air, fire and water

are all there, the elemental

forms can lift the face

cards up, transcending the shortening

fields as the handheld pile dwindles.

There are no knights,

no higher arcana,

lonely nights are less so,

just manipulating the parts of matter

and learning how the numbers move

down the lines that finely done

raise up the kings and queens.

About johnsmithiiimxiii

John Smith, IIMXIII is the avatar of an award winning poet, artist, etc. who still lives in the Palouse country of the Pacific NW. He has not received much notice with his prose . . . but as his avatar, I hope that he keeps plugging along.
